What cut does upwork take?

Upwork Fees – What You Need to Know?

Upwork, just like any other marketplace, charges a fee for offering a platform where freelancers can connect with potential clients. This fee is deducted directly from the freelancer’s earnings for each client.

Upwork’s Fee Structure

As of now, Upwork has a three-tiered pricing structure. The percentage they take varies based on your lifetime earnings with each individual client. Here are the details:

  • 20% for the first $500 billed with the client
  • 10% for lifetime billings with the client between $500.01 and $10,000
  • 5% for lifetime billings with the client that exceed $10,000

Note:

These rates are a-encompassing – which means that they include all fees such as payment processing and promoting you in the marketplace. The client is also charged a percentage as a service fee.

A Tip to Minimize Upwork Fees

Try to build long-term relationships with your clients. The more ongoing work you have with a client, the more you earn cumulatively, thus reducing your Upwork fee.
