Getting Paid on Upwork

Setting up your Payment Method

The first thing you need to do is setup your preferred payment method on Upwork. Follow these steps:

  • Login to your account and click on Settings.
  • From the drop down menu, choose Get Paid.
  • Click on Add a Payment Method.
  • Select your country and the method you would like to use to withdraw your earnings.
  • Fill in required details and save your settings.

Hourly vs Fixed Price

There are two basic types of contracts on Upwork – Hourly and Fixed Price. The way you get paid depends on the contract type:

Hourly Contracts

  • Time Tracker: You need to record your time using the Upwork Time Tracker App. The app takes screenshots while you are working which serves as proof of work done.
  • Weekly Billing: Weekly billing means that your worked hours in a week (Monday to Sunday) are billed to your client. The client gets a few days for a review and then is automatically charged on the following Friday.
  • Getting Paid: After client’s payment, your earnings become available for withdrawal after a 5-day security period.

Fixed-Price Contracts

  • Escrow: This is a special account that holds the payment for a job until it’s complete. Your client sets the whole payment or a part of it before you start the work.
  • Milestone: Each fixed-price contract is divided into milestones. Once you complete and submit a milestone, your client has to release the payment.
  • Getting Paid: Funds for a milestone become available for withdrawal once your client approves the work and releases the milestone payment.

Remember, always maintain open and professional communication with your clients about payments to ensure a smooth and successful freelance experience on Upwork!
