How is upwork paid?

Payment on Upwork

Upwork provides various methods for getting paid as a freelancer. The process differs slightly depending on whether you’re working on hourly contracts or fixed-price contracts.

Hourly Contracts

For hourly contracts, you’ll be paid for the number of hours you’ve worked. The entire process follows these steps:

  • Logging Work: You need to track your work hours using the Upwork’s Desktop App and log them onto the Work Diary. This shows the client what tasks you have been working on.
  • Review Period: There’s a review period at the end of each work week. This gives the client a chance to dispute any hours they don’t agree with. This period lasts until the following Friday.
  • Payment: Once the review period concludes without any disputes, Upwork processes your payment. Payments for hourly contracts are available 10 days after the end of the billing period, which is every Monday.

Fixed-Price Contracts

Fixed-price contracts are a bit different. The payment is made for the finished work, not for the hours. The process is the following:

  • Set Milestones: You and the client will agree on milestones for the project. These are smaller tasks that need to be completed as part of the larger project.
  • Submit Work: Once you complete a milestone, you’ll submit it for review. The client then releases the payment for that milestone.
  • Final Payment: Once all milestones are completed and approved by the client, the final payment is released.

Remember, it’s important to communicate well with your client to avoid any misunderstanding. If any issues arise, you can always contact Upwork support for help.
