How does upwork charge?
Understanding Upwork Charges
As a freelancer on Upwork, it’s crucial to understand the platform’s charging process to plan your freelancing business properly.
Service Fee
Upwork charges a sliding fee based on your lifetime billings with each client. It charges:
- 20% for the first $500 billed with the client
- 10% for lifetime billings with the client between $500.01 and $10,000
- 5% for lifetime billings with the client that exceed $10,000
The service fee is charged on each payment amount you receive from your client, and it is automatically deducted by Upwork.
Connects
Besides the service fee, you’ll also need to pay for ‘connects’ to submit proposals to clients. Each job post requires between 1 and 6 connects, depending on its size. Connects cost $0.15 each.
Withdrawal Fees
Lastly, there might be a fee when you withdraw your earnings from Upwork. Withdrawal fees depend on the payment method you’ve selected.
Examples:
- Direct to Local Bank: $0.99 per transfer.
- Wire Transfer: $30 per transfer.
- PayPal: No fee for withdrawals from Upwork, but PayPal may charge a fee.
Note: Always check Upwork’s current fees before billing, as they can change.
