How did upwork start?

Origin of Upwork

Upwork, originally known as Elance-oDesk, was formed after a merger in 2013-2014 between Elance and oDesk, two leading platforms in the online work marketplace.Elance was founded in 1999 by Beerud Sheth and Srini Anumolu. It started as an IT Consulting company that later transformed into a work marketplace when they noticed an increase in freelance work.oDesk was established in 2003 by Odysseas Tsatalos and Stratis Karamanlakis. It was designed to provide a platform to Tsatalos’ tech colleagues who were unable to travel but could work remotely.

Transition to Upwork

In 2015, Elance-oDesk was rebranded as Upwork, with a new platform launched that included real-time chat capabilities aimed at reducing the time it takes to find, hire and start work. Today, Upwork is one of the largest and widely recognized freelance marketplace.
