How to Get Paid on Upwork

Setting Up Payment Method

To begin with on Upwork, you first need to set up a payment method. You can choose from the following options:

  • Direct to U.S. Bank (ACH): This is a free option and it requires you to add a U.S. bank account.
  • Direct to Local Bank: This option allows you to transfer your funds to your local bank account in your local currency. Fees are applied for each transaction.
  • Wire Transfer: With this method, you can send your earnings directly to your bank account in U.S. dollars. Fees are applied for each transaction.
  • Payoneer: With Payoneer, you can choose to receive your funds on a prepaid MasterCard or to your Payoneer bank account. Fees are applied.
  • PayPal: To use PayPal, your account must be able to receive payments. Fees are applied by PayPal.
  • M-Pesa: Available only in Kenya, you can receive funds directly to your M-Pesa account and fees are applied.

Payment Schedule

Next, you should understand when and how you will be paid. The payment schedule on Upwork depends on the type of contract you have with your client:

  • Hourly Contracts: Hourly contracts are billed weekly. You’ll get paid after the client reviews the work, which is a period of 5 days after the billing period ends.
  • Fixed-Price Contracts: For fixed-price contracts, you get paid based on the milestones that you and the client have set. Once a milestone is delivered and approved by the client, Upwork releases funds to your account.

Remember:

Be sure to regularly update and check your payment method and address details to ensure everything is correct. This will prevent you from experiencing any delay in the payment process.
